Two Annenberg Classroom documentaries released in 2015, “Habeas Corpus: The Guantanamo Cases” and “Magna Carta” have received awards for excellence.
“Habeas Corpus: The Guantanamo Cases,” which can be seen here, explains how the right of habeas corpus protects individual freedom from unlawful or arbitrary imprisonment. The documentary examines four major cases brought before the Supreme Court regarding the constitutional rights of prisoners who were suspected of terrorism and detained at Guantanamo Bay in the wake of the attacks on 9/11. The documentary has won:
- An Award of Excellence in the Best Shorts Competition in the category of Educational/Instructional/Training
- A Gold Award from the Aurora Awards in the category of Entertainment/Documentary: For Children/Youth
- A Silver Screen Award from the U.S. International Film & Video Festival in the category of Documentary: Film/Video/Digital: Documentaries: Short
- A Gold Eagle Award from the 59th CINE Gold Eagle Awards in the category of Children’s Programming: Short
The documentary “Magna Carta,” available here, looks at the origins and legacy of one of the most important documents in the history of democracy. The Magna Carta, whose 800th anniversary was celebrated in 2015, was a written declaration of rights by English barons and went on to inspire the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution. The film has been awarded:
- An Award of Excellence in the Best Shorts Competition in the category of Educational/Instructional/Training
- A Platinum Best of Show Award from the Aurora Awards in the category of Entertainment/Documentary: For Children/Youth
- A Certificate for Creative Excellence from the U.S. International Film & Video Festival in the category of Documentary: Film/Video/Digital: Documentaries: Short
- Finalist in the 59th CINE Gold Eagle Awards in the category of Children’s Programming: Short
