Washington Post Executive Editor Marty Baron will discuss the media’s power to produce policy change with Kathleen Hall Jamieson, director of the Annenberg Public Policy Center, in a Sept. 9 event sponsored by the Fels Institute of Government at Penn. Baron became executive editor of the Washington Post in 2013, following a distinguished career as editor of the Boston Globe, where he led a team of journalists that disclosed a decades-long cover-up of serial sexual abuse by priests within the Boston Archdiocese.The Globe was awarded the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service “for its courageous, comprehensive coverage of sexual abuse by priests, an effort that pierced secrecy, stirred local, national and international reaction and produced changes in the Roman Catholic Church.” That work was featured in the Academy Award-winning movie “Spotlight.”
Baron’s career also included work at the New York Times, the Los Angeles times and the Miami Herald, where he led the newspaper’s Pulitzer-winning coverage of Elián González’s return to Cuba.
