John D. Negroponte, Director of National Intelligence, delivered the inaugural Leonore Annenberg Lecture in Public Service and Global Understanding October 26 before an audience of nearly 200 people.
The lecture was sponsored by the Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania, University President Amy Gutmann, the Annenberg School for Communication’s Institute for Public Service and the Annenberg Public Policy Center. It recognizes Mrs. Annenberg’s generosity and service throughout the world, as well as to the University and its many educational and policy institutions.
Negroponte cited Mrs. Annenberg’s involvement in furthering global understanding, as Chief of Protocol, as a philanthropist and as a director of educational and cultural organizations that promote democracy, civic engagement, health and education.
Her work along with that of her late husband, Ambassador Walter Annenberg, serve as examples of the “freedom and passion with which our private citizens engage in public life,” Negroponte told his audience, which included Mrs. Annenberg and her family.
